Shreya P.: What interests you in writing about mythology?
Eliza Raine: I’m a history graduate and I find the way people explained the incredible world around us thousands of years ago fascinating. Almost every myth in all cultures has some reason, moral lesson or justification behind it. The Greeks though, their stories are better than any show you’ll see on Netflix. SP: How do you approach your research when writing? ER: I research heavily at the start of a new project and I often try to get hold of physical textbooks. When I have a loose outline for the whole series I’ll go fully into every version of the myth I can online (in the case of Skies of Olympus that’s the first three trials of Hercules). Jstor and online encyclopedias are great for that. I keep a folder on my computer for images that help and inspire me too. I include excerpts from the real classical texts in my novels both as a starting reference for anyone who wants to read further into it and also so that readers know there’s some basis in the ancient myth. I live in the UK and Greece is a four hour flight and I’ve convinced my husband to visit with me three times now too ? SP: What are some key writing habits of yours? ER: I tried lots of different ways of outlining and have now found a really good balance. I plot the whole series by character rather than by events. I have a spreadsheet that tracks when my characters need to feel and show and do things throughout the series and that helps massively with my more detailed outline when I come to write that section. Also, know the ending! I have unfinished series on my computer because I didn’t plan the whole ending properly – which is now a big no-no for me now. I also found great beta readers and an editor, so I don’t get too far down a path if it’s not working (Skies started of as a sci-fi story!). As far as daily habits go – bum in seat! I have three cats and a puppy and I let them distract me too much but when I sit down and just crack on I can get a lot done. When I really need to focus, noise cancelling headphones, 50 minute sprints and Coke Zero! SP: Do you have creative hobbies other than writing? ER: I love playing board games. I don’t know if that counts as creative though! My husband and I have a big collection of great two-player games but all the best ones are four-player. I also love sewing but I’m not very good at it – I can’t sew in a straight line. SP: What advice would you give your characters? ER: Calm down!! Lyssa has a fierce temper and I know from my own experience that losing your temper solves nothing! The Immortality Trials series is about the cost of an eternal life, and each of the POV characters wants something different out of the competition but they all have to find out what it’s worth to them. SP: Do you read as often or less often than you write? ER: Hard to say! I read lot and I listen to audiobooks a lot when I commute for my part time job but I probably do write more. SP: What’s one adventure your characters take that you would like to try? ER: My characters are all crew-members of ships that fly through skies filled with beautiful, brightly coloured clouds. As quite a claustrophobic person I can’t think of anything more liberating than flying through the sky on the open deck of a huge ship, watching glittering swirling clouds fly by. SP: What’s your favorite under-read book of all time? ER: Aurian by Maggie Furey. I’m not even sure you can get it as an eBook. It was given to me when I was younger and it’s this amazing high fantasy series about elemental mages and I just love it. Thank you Eliza!
