A lot of my focus is on new or upcoming releases, but as seen in my TBR post, I obviously can't read everything in the world! I'm starting First Impression Fridays as a new weekly post to help me tame my shelves. Each week, I'll spotlight a book or series I haven't yet read, but that I own, whether as an ebook or hard copy. I'll do a quick rundown of why I own the book, and then take a stab at my first impression of the book based off what I remember. I'm binding myself to the honor code in writing these completely without looking at a summary, to make it all more interesting. Read on to see me struggle to discuss Beautiful Creatures! This week, I'm looking at Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. I bought this used ages ago, maybe from a library sale or used bookstore. To be honest, I don't remember. When I buy books, unless it's a preorder, I usually go hard and buy in bulk. I haven't read anything by Kami Garcia, but I have read Margaret Stohl's Black Widow series. For me, those took the place of the Black Widow movies that never happened. I enjoyed the new characters Stohl introduced and the different aspects of the Red Room and Avengers dynamic that was explored. I would definitely recommend those to any Black Widow fan who's patiently waiting for solo movies. But I digress. Back to Beautiful Creatures. What I remember about the book/series: I remember thinking Beautiful Creatures was one of the cornerstones of YA, so I *had* to own it, though I never got around to actually reading it. I'm pretty sure it was popular for a while, but I also think it was one of those books that had mass appeal but also garnered mass disapproval. I also think there was a TV/movie adaptation at some point, but I don't remember if that was well-received. Because of the adaptation, I'm pretty sure this is first in a series, because usually standalone fantasy books don't get brought to the screen. I could be wrong, though. What I remember about the plot: From what I recall, it's some sort of werewolf thing? I think there's a "small town, girl meets strange and beautiful boys" dynamic, with lots of historic drama and secrets and possibly a love triangle? I wonder if it was published before or after Twilight and the Vampire Diaries? From the cover, I'm getting those same mysterious vibes. At any rate, Beautiful Creatures will be staying on my shelf until I can read it and find out what it's really about. That's it for this week! Thanks for stickin' around! Happy reading and happy fall, The Baroness
