First, Kelley's three questions for me:
1. What’s your fave ‘stop and smell the roses’ activity? (I.e. what’s something you do purely because it makes you feel present or peaceful?) I have a bullet journal, and in addition to using it to plan my life, I also add in little doodles and quote pages. This lets me practice my brush lettering and illustration, and it’s just a little way to insert some life into fairly boring to-do lists. I don’t sell art, I just make it because I like to. 2. What’s a place in the world where you feel you most belong? Any empty theater. I love the potential in a half-built set, or seeing the house without an audience. Even when no one’s inside, a theater has its own presence, which is calming. It makes me feel welcomed, like I don’t have to hide. I love that feeling because it makes it so easy to work. It doesn’t matter what kind of work, either. I’ve worked on shows, but I’ve also written papers, blog posts, and made collages inside a theater. I think it’s the possibilities floating around that help with my creativity. 3. What’s a time you did something that scared you, but now you’re so grateful you did it? As you know, I’m a theatre nerd and I recently had the opportunity to see The Lifespan of a Fact on Broadway (A fantastic show, would definitely recommend). After the show, sometimes actors will come out the stage door to sign autographs and take pictures with fans. I am petrified of asking strangers for things, so I was reluctant to ask the attendants if the actors would be stage dooring, and I was also nervous to ask for a photo with the actors. However, the people I was with urged me to go out there and be pushy, and I could not be more glad I listened. Everyone was so nice, plus I got to meet Daniel Radcliffe! Then, my 3 questions for her: 1. What change has occurred over the past year that you’re grateful for? I have a lower back problem that started about 3 or 4 years ago that I have NOT been able to get a handle on. I saw a bazillion different doctors and tried a quadrillion different things—including Epsom salt baths and chiropractors and IT band stretches, which I’d never even HEARD of (they are tight. They hurt.)—but still pain in my low back. And right hip. Weird. Finally a musculoskeletal specialist noted a leg length discrepancy that NO ONE ELSE EVEN MENTIONED, gave me a $10 heel lift to stick in my shoe, and I’m doing so much better! Not 100% yet but much improved. I’m very grateful for that! 2. What relationships in your life (friends, family, etc) are you grateful for? I have an awesome family—I’m married with 2 sons, and we do all sorts of things and we’re together all the time. They are so fun and interesting! I don’t get to spend time with my parents anymore (my dad died in 2012 and my mom has Alzheimer’s and has thus become...more of a child than a parent, I guess. I’m very grateful for the years I had with them. 3. Would you adjust about your lifestyle to focus more on gratitude in your everyday life, and if so, how? The only thing I want to do better at in this venue is volunteerism with my kids—we’ve done Feeding America and tree planting and cleaning up the beach, but those are coming fewer and farther between as they get older and we all get busier. I’m very satisfied with my own personal gratitude in my everyday life—starting from morning appreciation of the sunrise on my way to the gym and ending with some cool appreciation or another—hot air balloons in the sky? We see those almost daily! A smile I get when I hold the door open coming out of the store? The phase of the moon that night? I notice! I feel like I’m doing well there...I just need to involve my kids in it more fully. Thanks for reading, and Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
