I maintain that the quality of a book relies at least partway on the relationships between its characters, and The Fandom definitely fell short in that respect. Fandom has been a major part of my life in recent years, so I was intrigued by the premise on the dust jacket. It had me wondering about what I would do if I accidentally derailed the plot of my favorite series, like Violet does after being transported into their world at Comic-Com.
However, once I actually started reading, I couldn't get past the characters to enjoy the rest of the novel. The main character, Violet, and her supposed best friend, Alice, absolutely did not portray a realistic friendship. Alice was insensitive about her recent popularity as a fanfiction writer, and Violet and Katie, their other friend, mocked her in turn for her looks and sensibilities. I am not here for this kind of toxicity in friendships, especially if it’s not necessary for the plot. The other thing that bugged me was the overall predictability. I saw many of the turns coming, and even the ending was unsurprising. This, too, could have been avoided. Violet was supposedly following the path of the main character, Rose, but the only part of Rose’s arc that was foreshadowed was “I am going to hang in four days,” which I thought was interesting the first couple of times around, because I wondered how Violet’s actions would change now that she knows she has a destiny, but over time, that sentence just became annoying. I was much more invested in the story when Violet chose to follow her own path and be her own person. Overall, a promising read that definitely had letdowns, but 3/5 stars for the premise and world, which were great! Due to the shortcomings of this book, I will not be reading a sequel.
