The release of Cassandra Clare’s Queen of Air and Darkness is coming up, which is Clare’s 16th book in the Shadowhunter universe. Since there have been so many, I thought I’d put together a little reading guide, for those who are just jumping into shadowhunting, and for returning readers to catch up as well. The Shadowhunter Chronicles were my introduction to YA books, and blogging as well. It wasn’t the first fandom I was a part of, but these books brought me together with other readers for the first time, and I will be forever grateful for that. I’d like to consider this my little tribute to that part of my life, and the time I spent with these characters. For this post, I’m only going to round up the main texts, and I’m not including the graphic novels, manga, or split volumes. These main texts fall into two categories: the five planned series written by Clare, and the short story collections which have been co-written by Clare, Sarah Rees Brennan, and Robin Wasserman. I usually read in publication order, regardless of the chronology. However, I have included the year of setting for those readers who would like to follow the characters through time. Also included are the GoodReads synopsis for the first book of each series, if applicable. The Mortal Instruments
The Infernal Devices
The Dark Artifices
The Last Hours
The Wicked PowersThe Wicked Powers: This series is way down the line, and the books have no individual titles as of now. Expected publication is in 2022, but that could change. “Cassandra Clare said that she will publish another trilogy in the Shadowhunters' world after the Dark Artifices and The TLH trilogy. It will have two main characters, Kit and Ty Blackthorn. More information to come... Cassandra Clare said about writing more books in the Shadowhunter World: My plan at the moment is to do five Shadowhunter series, total. I don’t know if I’ll do any series in the Shadowhunter world beyond that. I don’t know why five exactly — maybe because one of my major literary idols has always been Tamora Pierce and she did five series set in Tortall. :) Maybe I think I have five stories to tell in this world. Maybe I’ll get to the end and want to tell more. Maybe not — I have a stockpile of other worlds and stories in my head; I’m writing one of them by writing Magisterium now, but there are many others.” From GoodReads, 10/9/18 That concludes Part One of the Shadowhunter Reading Guide! Check back Thursday for Part Two, feat. the companion novels and short story collections!
