Retellings are amazing. There's something about rediscovering an old favorite in a new way, or modernizing something ancient. Ibi Zoboi absolutely hit the nail on the head with Pride, and it was fantastic. Zuri is a great main character. She's not afraid to speak her mind, but also has a lot of worries that came out in how she acted. I could totally see the similarities between Zuri and Elizabeth, which connected the two stories in more than just plot. Her dynamic between her and her family was also awesome to read about, and I would have liked a little more screen time for the sisters.
Of course, I have to comment on the romance! SOOO adorable. Darius absolutely lives up to expectations, and just like Mr. Darcy in the original, GROWS! Growth plays a huge part in the original as well, with both Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy opening their minds and obviously their hearts, and I was pleased to see that in Pride as well. Darius definitely made judgments about Zuri and her family, but one of the big morals is about first impressions not being enough, which came through here. My only wish is that some of the conflicts felt underdeveloped. Part of the original P&P that I like is the tension between the characters due to drama or disagreements, and I think that could have played out better or been stretched out. The book felt really short, and I'm left wanting more development for secondary characters and their plotlines. Overall, 4/5 stars, Pride is definitely going on the list of best retellings.
