*I received Time Sandwich from the author in exchange for my honest review* Time Sandwich turned out to be the complete opposite of what I had expected in the best of ways. I expected a long, confusing, drag of a read that I would dread to review, because I couldn’t find much to enjoy, but I found myself liking Time Sandwich way more than I anticipated. This goes to show that you shouldn’t judge a book by its synopsis (because the cover of Time Sandwich is gorgeous, like the rest of it). The first concept I need to explain for this review to make sense is that of a “start-in-the-middle” book. Some readers would be deterred by the notion that a book doesn’t progress linearly, but I actually think this makes sense for a time travel story. The book is in the order of a timeline, meaning that the past is page one, and the future might be page sixteen, or three, or any number greater than one. The reader starts in the present day, and follows the characters as they jump to different times using colorful lines drawn between pages as a guide. The strength of this book comes from its originality. I had so much fun reading because of the format, and found it to be a break from my regularly scheduled programming: novels that progress in one way, where skipping to the end results in major spoilers. Huggs and Tuckie, the main characters, were positively adorable! I loved reading about their time travelling adventures, and I liked their determination to fix mistakes instead of running away. There were also some fun appearances by Millard Fillmore (Tuckie’s favorite president) and dinosaurs (everyone’s favorite prehistoric creature). The art is amazing and incredibly detailed. Full page color brings every page to life, and there’s always an unexpected detail in a corner that gives each place and time a touch of magic. My only quibble is that it was a bit short to have major conflicts. Most of the book is taken up by fun adventures all over time, but I would have also enjoyed some sort of battle with another traveller, or maybe another human antagonist somehow. Overall, though, I’m a huge fan of this book, and I would definitely read a sequel!
