True story: On my GoodReads Want-To-Read shelf, I have exactly 661 books. Almost every day, I scroll through my friends’ recent updates, and I find new books that sound promising, and I click that little green button with glee! I never think about the growth of my TBR list until it comes time to choose a new book to read, or I’m puzzled in the library (do I brave the long list, or do I give up and borrow Harry Potter again?). You can see how my lack of specificity in my TBR becomes a problem. I took a look back at my TBR shelf, and I found some books which have been sitting on my list for a full three years now! I started using GoodReads in 2015, so I have a chance at taming this chaos.
To tailor my TBR list, I know I need to be more honest with myself about my reading habits. It's unproductive for me to assume that I’ll get to read every book I want to, so from now on I will be more careful with what I shelve as Want-To-Read. My goal is to finish by December and start 2019 with a minimal TBR, allowing me to embrace my identity as a mood reader. If you're experiencing similar problems, here are my main three questions to whittle down a long: If this book dropped on my doorstep, would it be like pulling teeth for me to read it? Did I want to read this out of genuine interest, or did I add it because my friends liked it or it was popular at the time? Does this book fulfill a reading challenge, or will it help me diversify my reading? This will be a bit of much-needed "fall cleaning" for me, and I'll continue to share tips and tricks as I go. As always, happy reading!
