We asked the anthology authors to interview their characters. We’ve split the interviews into two parts. This is part one of two. Read Gallo – “Blood and Petals” What do you do for Halloween/All Hallow’s Eve/Samhain? Annie looks over at me. It’s a rather strange question and it makes me wonder how much this woman knows. Makes me wonder if this is a new trick from Bespatikos, if the past few years has just been in our heads. Still, I answer civilly, “You know, our kid’s still a little young to be going out in costume and all that. We just hand out Lucky Lights and Clark’s bars to the goblins that make their way to our door. You seen the new lone ranger masks and those little cowboy suits they’re sellin’ these days? Kinda breaking with tradition. I’m more used to seeing ghosts and devils than cowboys and injins.” What do you like best about your partner, physically, and why? “Well obviously, Paul is such a handsome man.” Annie giggles, like I’m not there, like she’s just chatting with the girls in the hair parlor. “We used to tease him about how long his lashes were and how soft his skin was, but I always secretly thought he was more handsome than Bing Crosby.” What drives you crazy about your partners, and why? Geez, these artist types. Why’d we ever agree to talk to them. Annie looks real uncomfy, pressing her skirt down over her tightly pressed knees. I wonder if she has an answer that she’s not going to say. I’ve got no complaints, and I think she’s happy too, but well, with Annie I guess I’d never know. She’s kept big secrets before, suffered for years through something I couldn’t tolerate for a day, so she might be— “I don’t see that it’s any of your business, but Paul is wonderfully patient. We talk about everything. I trust him more than I trust my closest girlfriends, and well, if there was something about him that ‘drove me crazy’ we’d work through it. Wouldn’t we, Paul?” “Course, and she’s perfect, so…I’ve got no complaints.” I lean over and kiss her cheek. “Except maybe that she needs to learn to make me coffee.” “You make it so much better, darling.” If you could go anywhere with your partner right now, where would it be, and why? That’s more reasonable and I very nearly say so. “Ah, it’s a swell time to travel. We love drivin’ on Eisenhower’s new highway and going to Wildwood Crest.” “It’s a beach town.” Annie boasts a little, which she has a tendency to do forget not everyone is as well off as she is... as we are. “We stay at an ultra-modern motel. It’s right there on the sand. They’ve got recliner chairs looking out at the water and a pool and everything.” What’s next for you and your partner? Again, they all look to me to answer. It still unnerves me, all these people expecting me to have all the answers. I wasn’t raised to be the center of so much attention. “Well, I suspect they’ll be some more babies and I’m going to finish up my schoolin’.” I shrug. “Then who knows.” “We’ll be selling my uncle’s house. It’s much to big and dark.” “Or we raze it.” “What? Like… tear it down?” “Why not? You said you like being near my parents. Maybe we build a new one on the ashes.” Annie smiles. “Yes, I think I’d like that.” Cara McKinnon – “The Doors Between” What do you do for Halloween/All Hallow’s Eve/Samhain? ALEC: We don’t observe Samhain in Hong Kong, although there is a Ghost Festival that takes place earlier in the year. But it is a time of respect and honor, not a time of fear. Closer to Samhain, but still about a month off, people over there are celebrating the harvest with a lantern festival and dragon dances. Things are very different here in Scotland. Before Fiona returned, most of the people living on the island preferred not to be around Moir House during Samhain. In the past, the spirits were always stronger then—more present—and were bolder about their mischief and malice. FIONA: Samhain was always a busy time for me on the continent, for similar reasons. The spirits are restless and the veil between worlds thins all over Europe, not just in specific places. But I have observed many different rituals in many different places, and I particularly enjoy mummer’s parades. I hope to someday see a dragon dance. What do you like best about your partner, physically, and why? FIONA: Alec has the most beautiful hair. It’s long, and black, and smooth, and I could run my fingers through it forever. ALEC: Your hair is pretty nice, too. I had never seen someone with red hair until I came to Scotland. But I’ll be honest and say my favorite feature of yours is your bum. It’s round and beautiful and perfect. FIONA: *smacks Alec on that part of his anatomy* What drives you crazy about your partner, and why? FIONA: Alec doesn’t think well enough about himself, and he takes on too much responsibility for things that aren’t his obligation. ALEC: Fiona is stubborn as a mule. If you could go anywhere with your partner right now, where would it be, and why? ALEC: Actually, we were just discussing this. FIONA: And we’re headed to China soon, to visit Alec’s family over there. It will be good for his son Duncan to experience that side of his heritage. What’s next for you and your partner? ALEC: Traveling the world for a while. And then come back here and see if we can cleanse this place of its dark memories and make some new, beautiful ones to replace them. FIONA: I’m surprised to here you say that. I would have thought you’d want to leave the place to tumble into a pile of stones. ALEC: It’s the family seat. There’s too much history there, and it’s not all bad. Besides, you’re a witch. You can handle it. FIONA: I know I can, but I’m glad you know it, too. ALEC: *pulls Fiona close for a kiss* The anthology authors will be answering more questions on this blog tour! To check out all of the stops, visit: https://www.starsandstonebooks.com/blog-tour.
