I'm back with Part Two of my reading guide! This time focusing on the companion novels and short story collections. Of the five here, I've read one. This is partly because only three have been published as I'm writing this, and partly because... so many books, so little time! Forgive me! Anyways, I'm looking forward to reading the others so if you get there before I do, share your opinions! I'd love to hear from you anytime. The Bane ChroniclesThe Bane Chronicles: The Bane Chronicles was the first of the short story collections. I usually read it right after The Mortal Instruments, because the stories aren't set in one particular time period. The hard copy of the book also has a graphic-novel style interpretation of a scene at the beginning of each story. I liked this multi- media approach to Magnus' story and I think they added depth. "This collection of eleven short stories illuminates the life of the enigmatic Magnus Bane, whose alluring personality, flamboyant style, and sharp wit populate the pages of the #1 New York Times bestselling series, The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices." From GoodReads, 10/23/18 Tales from the Shadowhunter AcademyI haven't read this book yet, but it was released in the same manner as The Bane Chronicles. First as ebooks, and then as a bound copy featuring an extra story. I imagine and hope it will be just as good. Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy, as expected, follows Simon Lewis after City of Heavenly Fire. "Simon Lewis has been a human and a vampire, and now he is becoming a Shadowhunter. But the events of City of Heavenly Fire left him stripped of his memories, and Simon isn’t sure who he is anymore. He knows he was friends with Clary, and that he convinced the total goddess Isabelle Lightwood to go out with him…but he doesn’t know how. And when Clary and Isabelle look at him, expecting him to be a man he doesn’t remember…Simon can’t take it. When the Shadowhunter Academy reopens, Simon throws himself into this new world of demon-hunting, determined to find himself again. Join Simon on his journey to become a Shadowhunter, and learn about the Academy’s illustrious history along the way, through guest lecturers such as Jace Herondale, Tessa Gray, and Magnus Bane. These ten short stories give an epilogue to the Mortal Instruments series and provide glimpses of what’s in store in the Dark Artifices." From GoodReads, 10/23/18 Ghosts of the Shadow MarketI'm so glad we get to explore more of the Shadow Market! It's such a dynamic environment to be in, and I'm interested to read how Brother Zachariah changes along with it. “The Shadow Market is a meeting point for faeries, werewolves, warlocks and vampires. There the Downworlders buy and sell magical objects, make dark bargains, and whisper secrets they do not want the Nephilim to know. Through two centuries, however, there has been a frequent visitor to the Shadow Market from the City of Bones, the very heart of the Shadowhunters. As a Silent Brother, Brother Zachariah is sworn keeper of the laws and lore of the Nephilim. But once he was a Shadowhunter called Jem Carstairs, and his love, then and always, is the warlock Tessa Gray. Follow Brother Zachariah and see, against the backdrop of the Shadow Market’s dark dealings and festive celebrations, Anna Lightwood’s first romance, Matthew Fairchild’s great sin and Tessa Gray plunged into a world war. Valentine Morgenstern buys a soul at the Market and a young Jace Wayland’s soul finds safe harbor. In the Market is hidden a lost heir and a beloved ghost, and no one can save you once you have traded away your heart. Not even Brother Zachariah…” From GoodReads, 10/23/18 The Eldest Curses
The Shadowhunter's CodexThe Codex is the instructional manual for the Shadowhunter world, but it's never boring. The full-color illustrations and vivid descriptions of Shadowhunter life actually make for an entertaining read. I haven't gotten to read the Codex in its entirety, but my favorite part is the commentary from the Mortal Instruments characters. This book has been "passed on" to several different characters (notably Jace, Clary, and Simon), and they've each brought their own special something into the margins.
"The Clave is pleased to announce the newest edition of the Nephilim’s oldest and most famous training manual: the Shadowhunter’s Codex. Since the thirteenth century, the Codex has been the young Shadowhunter’s best friend. When you’re being swarmed by demons it can be easy to forget the finer points of obscure demon languages or the fastest way to stop an attack of Raum demons. Geography, History, Magic, and Zoology textbook all rolled into one, the Codex is here to help new Shadowhunters navigate the beautiful, often brutal world that we inhabit. " From GoodReads, 10/23/18
